Grimm's Bluff of Happy Canyon

Mindful Wine Journal: Producer Spotlight

Grimm’s Bluff | Happy Canyon- Santa Barbara County, CA

Biodynamic Estate Vineyard

Grimm’s Bluff is a 246 family-owned ranch and vineyard on a bluff overlooking the Santa Ynez River in the Happy Canyon district of Santa Barbara County, southeast of Santa Ynez. They have 16.5 acres of vineyard planted to Bordeaux varieties that thrive in the gravel, clay and loamy soils of Happy Canyon. Warm days are moderated by an afternoon wind that blows down the Santa Ynez valley from the west, a defining characteristic of appellation. Since first planting vines in 2012, Grimm’s Bluff has followed Biodynamic and organic farming. With noted winemaker Paul Lato consulting in the cellar, it is no surprise that these wines represent some of the most distinctive and elegantly crafted Bordeaux-inspired wines in the Central Coast.

What we love...

100% Sauvignon Blanc. The Musqué clone lends beautiful floral highlights to this Biodynamically farmed Sauvignon Blanc. Aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness, this is shows classic aromas of gooseberry, green apple and lime, a palate-coating texture and distinctive wet river stone minerality that lingers in the finish.

Pairing Notes: Goat’s cheese, risotto with asparagus or green peas, halibut with beurre blanc.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. In homage to the great Cabernets of the Bordeaux Left Bank, this Cabernet from the gravelly loam terroir of Grimm’s Bluff offers a medley of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, chocolate, and spice. It displays a wonderful balance of richness and elegance to enjoy now or later.

Pairing Notes: Salty, fatty, rich steaks and lamb dishes; your favorite cheese and charcuterie.
