Mindful Wine Journal: Producer Spotlight

Coquelicot Estate Vineyard | Los Olivos, CA

Named for the bright red poppy that dots the French countryside, Coquelicot (pronounced “ko-klee-ko”) is a 94-acre certified organic estate vineyard in the Los Olivos district of the Santa Ynez Valley, first planted in 1997. Owned by the Rosenson family, Coquelicot was an early adopter of organic viticulture in the area, making the transition to organics in 2007 and achieving complete CCOF Certification in 2015. With Mike Roth of Lo-Fi Wines as head winemaker, Coquelicot’s winemaking philosophy remains guided by standards of low production with minimal intervention. They produce estate wines and are an important source of fruit for local organic and Biodynamic producers.

What we love...

2018 COQUELICOT LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT SAUVIGNON BLANC

100% Sauvignon Blanc. From Coquelicot’s estate in Los Olivos, this elegant white offers notes of lemony citrus, green apple and herb, with a mineral-laced finish. Like French Sancerre kissed by the California sun.

Pairing Notes: Quinoa salad with tomatoes and mint, fresh burrata cheese with stone fruits and basil.

2017 COQUELICOT "ESTATE" LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT MALBEC

100% Malbec. An excellent example of California Malbec to rival the best of Mendoza, without the heavy oak. This is rich in red and blue fruits with subtle earth spice, a soft mid-palate and fine, smooth tannins.

Pairing Notes: Classic Argentine asado or grilled portabello mushrooms with chimichurri sauce.
